Structural disorder-driven topological phase transition in noncentrosymmetric BiTeI

We investigate the possibility of using structural disorder to induce a topological phase in solid state system. Using first-principles calculations, we introduce trivial insulator BiTeI and observe emergence insulating phase. By modifying bonding environments, crystal-field splitting is enhanced spin-orbit interaction produces band inversion bulk electronic structure. Analysis Wannier charge centers surface structure reveals strong with Dirac states. Finally, propose prescription for inducing states from crystalline materials.
